Debuting in September 2009, the SafeDrive MiniDVR is Safety Vision’s new windshield-mounted, event-based mobile DVR–an onboard surveillance solution designed to improve mobile operations, enhance driver safety, and reduce risk for public and commercial fleets. The SafeDrive features a compact footprint, easy installation, two integrated surveillance cameras, post-event snapshot recording, GPS tracking, and an internal battery backup for continuous recording.

In this sample video clip from the first generation SafeDrive model, the driver narrowly avoids a pile-up as he chats up the girlfriend on his cellphone—and its all caught on camera. (A driver safety advocate, Safety Vision’s advise is: “Put it in your pocket ’til you park it!”) The clip shows video from a forward-facing road-view camera and a rear-facing cabin-view camera, as displayed by the SafeDrive system’s viewing software GUI.

With SafeDrive, video is automatically recorded when a vehicle operator is speeding or driving erratically, when the driver/operator manually presses the Event Save button, or when a crash occurs. Also recorded and tracked are GPS map coordinates, G-force data, vehicle speed, event trends, and audio. All this data can be accessed by the SafeDrive MiniDVR data management portal software, which provides advanced and powerful playback, search, and export features as well as quantifiable tools for event trends and event location that may be plotted in Google Map views.
